The Kniepsand is the vast sand plain along the whole west side of Amrum, a North Frisian island reached by ferry from Dagebüll. Once a separate sandbank, it has grown onto the island and today stretches for more than ten kilometres, up to around a kilometre and a half wide in places, so walking from the dunes to the water's edge can take a quarter of an hour. Wooden boardwalks lead across the dunes from the villages of Wittdün, Süddorf, Nebel and Norddorf, and Amrum's red-and-white lighthouse, one of the tallest on the German North Sea coast, watches over the southern half. The beach faces the open North Sea, so waves and wind come in unobstructed from the west; with a strong westerly the surf is rough and the currents along the outer edge of the sand are dangerous. Swimming is only advised at the lifeguarded bathing areas in summer, and parts of the beach are set aside for naturists, dogs and kite flying. The sheer space makes it one of the emptiest big beaches in Germany even in August. Sea temperature is highest in late summer. The wind forecast and sea temperature for Amrum's Kniepsand are below.
