Wiek is a small village on the Wittow peninsula in the far north of Rügen, on the shore of the Wieker Bodden, a shallow, sheltered lagoon that opens to the Baltic only through narrow channels. Its harbour still has the long concrete chalk-loading bridge from the days when Rügen chalk was shipped from here, and the flat, protected water in front of the village is a well-known kitesurfing and windsurfing spot. The live webcam, run by a holiday let in the village, looks over the harbour and the bodden; its title describes it as a kiting and surf spot. Because the lagoon is enclosed, there are no waves here, only small wind ripples, which makes it suitable for learning and for freestyle on flat water. Westerly to northerly winds blow across the bodden and are the most reliable directions, but the water is shallow in large areas and its level falls after long spells of offshore wind, so check depths and stay clear of the harbour channel and boat traffic. Reed beds and bird areas along the shore are protected. The water in the lagoon warms faster than the open Baltic in spring and summer.
