Leighton Beach lies in North Fremantle, between Cottesloe and the mouth of the Swan River, and on summer afternoons it is one of Perth's main kitesurfing and windsurfing beaches. The draw is the Fremantle Doctor, the strong south-westerly sea breeze that blows in most summer afternoons from around midday, often reaching 15 to 25 knots. At Leighton it blows side-on to side-onshore along the west-facing beach, giving long runs over choppy water with small wind-swell for jumping and wave riding. The open beach and steady breeze make it suitable for intermediate and advanced riders; beginners are better served by lessons on the flatter water of the river and bay. Kite launching and riding areas are set by local rules, and the beach is shared with swimmers near the Leighton surf life saving club, so riders should keep clear of the patrolled flags. On mornings with an easterly offshore wind and a south-west swell, small surf can break along the sand. The working cranes of Fremantle Harbour are visible to the south.
