Heist grew from a fishing village into the third-largest resort on the Belgian coast during the Belle Époque, behind only Ostend and Blankenberge. Today it forms the western half of Knokke-Heist, and hardly a building survives on its seafront from those early years. A strip of old dune, the Directeur-Generaal Willemspark, still separates it from neighbouring Duinbergen. The webcam looks over the terrace of Anemos, a beach club and water-sports school with a bar and lessons, down across wide sand towards the North Sea. It is a handy view for families deciding how much beach the tide has left, and for club members judging the water. The coast runs south-west to north-east and faces north-west, so a wind from that side comes straight in, whereas southerlies blow offshore. Beginners should take particular care with those offshore days. The Coastal Tram and the railway from Bruges both serve Heist.
