Porto de Galinhas is a beach village in the municipality of Ipojuca, about 60 km south of Recife, and one of the most visited stretches of coast in Pernambuco. What draws people is the reef that runs parallel to the shore: at low tide it traps warm, clear natural pools full of small fish, and wooden jangadas, the local sailing rafts, ferry visitors out to them from the beach in front of the village. Because the pools only work when the water is low, the tide table on this page is the most useful thing to check before you go; at high tide the reef is covered and the beach is a normal tropical shoreline with gentle waves. North and south of the village the sand continues past palm groves towards Muro Alto and Maracaípe, the latter better known for surfing. The live beach webcam, a PTZ camera streamed by Transmissão ao Vivo Cidade, shows the shallow water, the crowds and the colour of the sea at this moment. Sea temperature is around 27 to 29 °C all year. The main rainy season runs roughly from April to July; from September to March the weather is usually drier and sunnier.
