Avila Beach is the small hotel beach at Penstraat 130 in Willemstad, Curaçao, on the edge of Pietermaai, the district founded in 1675 outside the old walled town and named after captain Pieter de Meij. Avila Beach Hotel opened in 1949 and is the oldest hotel on the island still in business; it has two private beaches, a pier with the Blues bar at its end, and offers snorkelling, diving and paddleboarding from the sand. Pietermaai had a hard history: Hurricane Pundi in September 1877 hit it worse than any other part of Curaçao, and the area later fell into decay before an urban renewal programme turned it into a neighbourhood of restored mansions, nightlife and jazz bars. Since 1997 it has been part of the Unesco World Heritage site of historic Willemstad, and the Handelskade and the floating bridge are a short walk away.
