Lakolk is the main beach of Rømø, Denmark's southernmost North Sea island, which is joined to the mainland by a causeway of more than nine kilometres across the Wadden Sea. The beach here is one of the widest in Europe, a sand plain that can be several hundred metres from the dunes to the water, and it is one of the few beaches in Denmark where cars are allowed to drive and park on the sand, so you can park almost at the water's edge. That firm, flat sand and the steady North Sea wind also make Lakolk a favourite for kite buggies, land yachts and kite flying, and kitesurfers ride the shallow water at the edge of the beach, using the zones set aside for them. The beach faces west, so westerly winds are onshore and bring waves over the outer sandbanks, south-westerly and north-westerly winds are side-onshore and popular for kiting, and easterly winds are offshore and should be avoided on the water. The water is shallow a long way out, and at low tide channels and sandbanks change quickly, so keep an eye on the tide and on traffic on the sand.
