La Patacona is the beach of Alboraia, just north of the city of Valencia, where the city's long Malvarrosa beach continues without a break past the municipal boundary. It is a wide, flat strip of fine golden sand with a newer, quieter promenade than the city stretches to the south, lined with restaurants, terraces and a few apartment blocks rather than the dense city seafront. Alboraia is the home of horchata, the cold drink made from tiger nuts grown in the surrounding farmland of the huerta, and a glass with fartons after the beach is a local ritual. The beach faces east into the Mediterranean, shelves gently and has lifeguards in the bathing season, so it suits families and swimmers. On summer afternoons a steady sea breeze sets in from the east and south-east, and when the stronger levante blows in autumn and spring it pushes short, choppy waves onto the sand. Further north the coast turns into quieter beaches towards Port Saplaya. The water warms from about 14 °C in February to 26–27 °C in August.
