Virginia Beach is the largest city in Virginia and its oceanfront is the state's main resort: a three-mile concrete boardwalk with a parallel bike path running from Rudee Inlet north past rows of hotels, with the giant King Neptune statue at 31st Street. The surf scene is old and strong. The East Coast Surfing Championships have been held here since 1963, and the best-known break is the 1st Street Jetty at the south end, beside Rudee Inlet, where sand builds up along the rocks and holds better waves than the open beach. Further north the oceanfront is a long beach break. It faces east and works on north-east to south-east swells from nor'easters and hurricanes passing offshore, best with a westerly wind; summers are often small and crowded. During the summer lifeguard season the city restricts surfing to designated areas and times, so check the posted rules. Rip currents and shorebreak are common hazards, and lifeguards staff the stands along the resort area from late spring to early autumn. Cape Henry and First Landing State Park lie to the north, the quieter beaches of Sandbridge to the south. We have no live cam for Virginia Beach yet; use the surf report below.
