Calais is best known as a ferry port, but it also has a real beach, a broad strand on the Côte d'Opale just west of the harbour mouth, lined with rows of white beach huts. France comes closest to England along this coast: Dover is only 38 km away, and its white cliffs can be seen on a clear day. Ferries crossing the Strait keep passing behind the sand all day. To the west the shore runs on towards Sangatte and Cap Blanc-Nez, about 10 km away, part of the Deux Caps protected landscape that draws millions of visitors a year. This Windy webcam looks along the beach from close to its eastern end, and the view is wide enough to show the waterline and how far the tide has gone out. The tidal range is large here, and currents run strongly through the Strait, so bathers should stay in the supervised area in summer. A north-westerly blows straight onshore.
