Collioure is the best-known village of the Côte Vermeille, the short rocky coast where the Pyrenees reach the Mediterranean just north of the Spanish border. Its small harbour is framed by the Château Royal on one side and, on the other, by the church of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, whose round bell tower stands at the water's edge and once served as the lighthouse; the light and colours here drew Matisse and Derain in 1905, the summer that gave birth to Fauvism. The Boramar beach lies beside the church, a short beach of sand and pebbles in a sheltered cove, with more small beaches along the bay. It faces east, so the Tramontane, the strong north-westerly that funnels between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, blows offshore and leaves the cove flat, while easterly winds bring the waves. This is a place for swimming and snorkelling among the rocks, crowded in summer and lovely out of season. Sea temperature is about 13 °C in late winter and roughly 23 °C in August.
