Rossnowlagh is a long, sandy, west-facing beach on Donegal Bay in the south of County Donegal, a few miles north of Ballyshannon and Bundoran. The beach runs for around two miles and shelves very gently, so the Atlantic swell arrives as soft, peeling waves that are among the most beginner-friendly in Ireland, and Rossnowlagh holds an important place in Irish surfing history: one of the country's first surf clubs was formed here in the 1960s. When the reefs around Bundoran are too big or too powerful, this is where many people come to ride something gentler. An easterly wind is offshore; a strong westerly makes it messy, but the gentle slope means it is still often usable for learners. As at a few other Irish beaches, cars are allowed onto the sand, so watch out for traffic and park well above the tide. A hotel sits right on the beach, there are surf schools and a car park, lifeguards patrol in summer, and a Franciscan friary with gardens lies a short walk inland. Sunsets over Donegal Bay are a highlight. The sea off Donegal reaches about 15 °C in August and drops to around 9 °C in late winter.
