Lignano Pineta is the central district of Lignano Sabbiadoro, the resort on a sandy peninsula in Friuli-Venezia Giulia between the Marano lagoon and the mouth of the Tagliamento. Where Sabbiadoro to the west is the older, busier centre, Pineta was laid out in the 1950s by the architect Marcello D'Olivo on a spiral plan of streets through the pine wood that gives it its name, with lower-rise hotels and holiday homes hidden among the trees. The beach in front is wide, fine and golden, sloping very gently into the shallow northern Adriatic, and a long pier with a boardwalk reaches out over the water. Like the rest of this coast it faces south, has almost no surf and is ideal for small children; the bora from the north-east blows offshore in gusts, while the scirocco brings onshore chop and higher water in autumn. Sea temperature goes from around 9 °C in February to about 26 °C in August. The webcam is a Windy timelapse looking along the beach and the pier, which helps to judge the crowds and the sea before heading down.
