Torregrande is the beach of Oristano, on the west coast of Sardinia, and takes its name from the Torre Grande, a sixteenth-century Spanish watchtower that is one of the largest coastal towers on the island and still stands at the end of the seafront. The beach is a long, straight stretch of fine sand on the Gulf of Oristano, backed by pine woods and a promenade, with a small marina at one end. It faces south-west into the gulf, which is wide open to the mistral that sweeps down the west coast; on those days the water fills with chop and the beach is used by windsurfers and kitesurfers, while in calm summer weather it is a shallow, family-friendly beach. The Sinis peninsula, with the Phoenician and Roman ruins of Tharros and the lagoons of Cabras, home to flamingos, is a short drive to the north-west. Sea temperature is about 14 °C at the end of winter and around 24 to 25 °C in August, cooled at times by mistral upwelling.
