North of San Miguel the shore road on Cozumel continues past the marina and the airport towards a quieter row of hotels and condominiums, the northern hotel zone. The live cam on this page belongs to the Buccanos Beach Club on this stretch and looks out across low rock, a palapa and a strip of sand to the Cozumel Channel. Like the rest of the island's west side, this coast is in the lee of the trade winds, so the water is normally flat in the mornings, and in the evening the sun drops behind the Yucatán mainland across the channel. There is little continuous sand here: the shoreline is mostly ironshore with ladders and decks for getting into the water, which suits snorkelling and paddling better than lying on a towel. Northerly fronts in winter, the nortes, can put a short chop on this side for a day or two. The channel current that makes Cozumel famous among divers runs here as well, so stay close to shore when you snorkel without a boat. Water temperature varies only a few degrees, from about 26 °C in February to 29 °C at the end of summer, and the season for hurricanes is June to November.
