Castlepoint is a small coastal settlement on the Wairarapa coast of New Zealand's North Island, about an hour's drive east of Masterton, and one of the most striking places on the east coast. A long reef runs out to the Castlepoint lighthouse, built in 1913, which sits on a rocky outcrop, and together with the 162-metre Castle Rock it encloses a sheltered lagoon with a sandy beach. The live cam on this page looks over the lighthouse and the reef. The lagoon is calm and is where families swim, while the beaches outside the reef face the open Pacific and pick up swell from the north-east through to the south, giving beach and reef waves for experienced surfers; there are no lifeguards outside summer. The reef and the lighthouse walkway are exposed to waves, and people have been swept off the rocks, so stay on the track in big seas. Castlepoint hosts an annual horse race on the beach, one of the few officially sanctioned beach races in New Zealand. At Castlepoint, westerly winds blow offshore.
