Kijkduin is the smaller, quieter seaside district of The Hague, a few kilometres south of Scheveningen, where a boulevard with apartments, shops and the NH Atlantic hotel sits on top of the dunes above a wide North Sea beach. The live webcam, part of the Strandweer network of Dutch coastal cams, looks from the boulevard over the beach entrance and the sea. The beach faces west-north-west into the North Sea, so westerly and north-westerly winds blow onshore and bring the swell and wind waves that local surfers ride on the sandbanks, while easterly winds blow offshore and clean the waves up on the rarer days they occur. South-westerly winds run side-on along the coast and are popular with kitesurfers, who launch from the quieter stretches away from the beach pavilions. As everywhere on this coast, rip currents form between the sandbanks, particularly when the waves are bigger, so swim only near the lifeguard posts in the season. North of Kijkduin, the dunes of the Westduinpark separate it from Scheveningen, and to the south the beach runs on towards Ter Heijde and the Zandmotor, a huge artificial sand peninsula.
