Camber Sands, near Rye on the East Sussex coast, is a wide sweep of sand a few miles long, backed by the only sand-dune system in the county. At low tide the sea pulls back a very long way and leaves broad flats and channels; when the tide turns it comes back across them quickly, and people have been caught out on the sandbanks. The beach has also seen tragedies, including the drowning of several young men in the summer of 2016, so pay attention to the lifeguard flags and the tide times. Camber is one of the main kitesurfing and windsurfing beaches in the south-east of England. South-westerly winds blow cross-shore and, combined with the shallow water at mid tide, give good conditions for both freestyle and learning, while south-easterlies send in chop and small waves. In the busy summer season zoning separates kites from bathers, and the kite area should be checked locally. Large car parks sit behind the dunes, along with cafés and holiday parks, and Rye's old town and harbour are only a couple of miles inland. The Channel off Camber reaches about 18 °C in August.
