Pentewan Beach is a long, east-facing stretch of sand on St Austell Bay, a short drive along the coast from the fishing harbour of Mevagissey on Cornwall's south coast. Sheltered from the Atlantic swell that hits the north coast, it usually has gentle water and is popular for swimming, kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, with a watersports hire centre on the beach whose camera provides the live view on this page. Most of the land behind the sand is taken up by a large holiday park, and beside it sits the old village with its harbour, which once shipped china clay and stone but has long since silted up. The Pentewan Valley cycle trail runs inland from the village towards St Austell, and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are close by. Easterly and south-easterly winds blow straight onshore and can bring a short chop; westerlies leave the bay calm and are ideal for paddling.
