Maho Beach lies on the Dutch side of Saint Martin, in Sint Maarten, right at the end of the runway of Princess Juliana International Airport. Airliners on final approach cross the sand at less than 30 metres, so this short strip of white sand has become one of the most famous plane-spotting places on earth, and the bars behind it post the day's arrival and departure times on boards. The live beach cam is streamed by SHOWME Caribbean from Tortuga Maho Beach Café and keeps up to twelve hours of rewind, so you can scroll back to the last big landing. Treat the jet blast as a real hazard: departing aircraft throw towels, bags and people into the water or against obstacles, the government warns of serious injury or death, and a visitor holding the runway fence was killed in July 2017. Blast erosion leaves the beach almost without vegetation, and Hurricane Omar in 2008 and Hurricane Irma in 2017 each reduced it to boulders before the sand came back. Occasional large waves bring out windsurfers and skimboarders; on calmer days it is a place for a careful swim between flights. Read the wind and sea temperature here before heading over.
