Coolum Beach is a coastal town on the Sunshine Coast, about halfway between Maroochydore and Noosa, with a long east-facing beach that runs north from Point Arkwright to the rocky headland of Point Perry and beyond towards Peregian. The town end of the beach, by the surf club and the boardwalk, is the most popular spot, and Point Perry's headland gives a little protection from the south-east. Coolum is more exposed than the Noosa points and picks up most swell from the east to north-east, breaking over sandbanks that shift with the seasons; on a bigger south-east swell, small right-hand waves can form along the rocks of the headland. It suits a wide range of surfers, although the open beach can close out when the swell gets large. At Coolum, westerly winds blow offshore. Mount Coolum, a volcanic dome behind the town, offers a short, steep walk with a view over the coast. Lifeguards and the Coolum surf club patrol the beach.
