Mooloolaba Beach is the main beach of Mooloolaba, a resort town on the Sunshine Coast about 100 kilometres north of Brisbane. It curves north-eastwards from the breakwall at the mouth of the Mooloolah River towards Alexandra Headland, with the Esplanade's cafés and hotels right behind it. Facing north-east and tucked in behind Point Cartwright, the beach is protected from the prevailing south-east wind and swell, so it is usually calm, clear and safe for swimming – one of the most family-friendly beaches on the coast. Surf here is generally small: the beach only gets rideable waves when a north-east or east swell arrives, typically in the summer cyclone season, and then the waves suit beginners and longboarders. Stand-up paddling and swimming are more typical uses. The breakwall and river mouth have boat traffic and currents, so swim away from them. At Mooloolaba, southerly winds blow offshore.
