Nieuwpoort is really two places: the old town about 3 km inland, and the modern resort of Nieuwpoort-Bad built up beside the sea. This camera sits at Hotel Sandeshoved on the seafront and can pan, so it may show the promenade and dunes at one moment and the long wooden pier at the mouth of the River Yser the next. That river has its place in history, as Hendrik Geeraert opened the sluices here in 1914 to flood the land and halt the German advance. On the promenade stands Jan Fabre's bronze "Searching for Utopia", a man riding a giant turtle. The wide beach runs west to Oostduinkerke, and at low tide it is very broad. It faces north-west, so a breeze from that side comes in unobstructed, and swimmers should keep well clear of the river mouth and the pier.
