Playa Chica is the smaller of the two town beaches of Cartagena, a seaside resort in San Antonio province on Chile's central coast, about 110 km west of Santiago. Cartagena grew up in the early twentieth century as the summer retreat of Santiago's families, and the wooden mansions and the stepped promenade known as La Terraza, built above Playa Chica, still recall that era; the poet Vicente Huidobro is buried on the hill overlooking the sea. The beach lies in a sheltered bay below the cliffs, so it is usually calmer than the long, exposed Playa Grande to the south, although the Pacific stays cold, around 12 to 16 °C, and swells can still roll in. On summer weekends it fills with day-trippers who arrive by bus from the capital, and stalls and fairground rides line the seafront. The live cam is run by sanantonioimagen, a local channel with several cams in the province, and looks over the beach and the rocks to the sea, so you can check the waves and the crowd before setting out. January and February are the peak months; spring and autumn are quieter and often clear after the morning fog.
