Reñaca is the northern beach district of Viña del Mar, famous in Chile for the stacked apartment buildings that climb the dune slope above the sand, and for being the place where the young crowd spends the summer. The beach itself is about a kilometre and a half of golden sand facing west into the open Pacific, divided by rocks into sectors that locals know by number, with the mouth of the Estero de Reñaca at its southern end. Waves here are stronger and more regular than in Viña's central bay, so bodyboarders and surfers use the northern sectors and the nearby reef breaks when a south-west swell arrives, while swimmers should only enter the water in the lifeguarded areas flagged in summer. Water is cold year-round, around 13 to 16 °C, thanks to the Humboldt Current. Summer weekends bring heavy traffic on the coast road from Viña and Concón. The live cam is operated by Marejadas UV, the University of Valparaíso's swell-monitoring project, and looks north along the beach from high above, a reliable way to check the waves and the beach before you go. Big winter swells regularly close the beach to bathers.
