Gangmun Beach lies in Gangmun-dong in the city of Gangneung, Gangwon Province, on South Korea's east coast. The stream that flows out of Gyeongpo Lake to the sea divides the shore: north of it is the much larger Gyeongpo Beach, south of it Gangmun Beach, and an arched footbridge, the Gangmun Sotdae bridge, links them across the outlet. Behind the beach stand the small Gangmun fishing port and large hotels such as St. John's Gyeongpo and the Seamarq, and the Chodang district inland is known for its tofu village and the memorial park of the writers Heo Gyun and Heo Nanseolheon. Many visitors come for scuba diving as well as for the sand. This beach webcam is part of KT's GiGAeyes Live TV network and looks along the sand to the open East Sea, with pines framing the view. The coast faces east, so swell arrives from typhoons and from north-easterly winds, and the East Sea is noticeably cooler than Korea's southern and western coasts. In summer the beach is a busy bathing beach; outside the season it is quieter, with occasional surf. Check the wave height, wind and sea temperature on this page before you go.
