Atlantic City is the resort city on Absecon Island, New Jersey, famous for its casinos and for the Boardwalk, the first in the United States, which opened in 1870 and still runs for miles along the beach. Resorts Casino Hotel, which runs this live beach cam, opened in 1978 as the first legal casino outside Nevada, and its camera looks from the Boardwalk out over the beach and the Atlantic. Unlike most New Jersey shore towns, Atlantic City does not charge for beach access, and the beach is wide, with lifeguard stands spread along it in summer. The coast faces southeast, so it catches swell from nor'easters, from hurricanes passing offshore and from southerly wind swell in summer; the jetties and piers, including the Steel Pier, help shape the sandbars, and surfing is allowed at designated beaches during the guarded season. Northwest winds are offshore. Rip currents form next to jetties and piers, so swim in front of a lifeguard. The water is cold for much of the year, about 4 °C in late winter and 22 to 24 °C in August. The Boardwalk is lively all year, and summer weekends are the busiest time on the beach.
