Ocean City, on a barrier island in Cape May County, calls itself America's Greatest Family Resort, and it has been a dry town since its founding as a Methodist retreat in 1879: no alcohol is sold within city limits. Its boardwalk runs about two and a half miles along the beach, with amusement piers, arcades and food stands, and the beaches in front of it are wide and gently sloping. This live cam belongs to the Ocean City Fishing Club, whose pier at 14th Street has a pan-tilt-zoom camera looking north up the beach and the boardwalk. The island faces east-southeast, so it picks up swell from nor'easters in fall and winter and from tropical storms in late summer; jetties at many street ends hold sandbars that make peaks for surfing, and in summer certain beaches are set aside for surfers. Northwest winds are offshore. Ocean City Beach Patrol guards the beaches from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day or later, and beach tags are required for anyone 12 and over in that period. Rip currents near jetties and the pier are the main hazard. The water runs from about 4 °C in February to about 23 °C in August.
