Holden Beach is a family beach town on an eight-mile barrier island in Brunswick County, North Carolina, between Lockwood Folly Inlet to the east and Shallotte Inlet to the west, reached by a high bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway. Unlike most of the East Coast, the island faces almost due south, so the sun rises and sets over the water at different times of year and the sea is often calmer than on east-facing beaches. There are no high-rise hotels: the shore is lined with rental houses on stilts, with public beach accesses between them, and the town keeps a strong focus on its sea turtle nesting programme, with volunteers marking and watching nests through the summer. The surf is mostly small and suited to bodyboarding and beginners, livening up when tropical systems pass offshore in late summer and autumn or a cold front swings the wind to the north, which blows offshore here. Inlets have strong tidal currents and are not for swimming.
