Sunset Beach is the southernmost beach town in North Carolina, just above the South Carolina line in Brunswick County, and one of the quietest on the coast: no high-rises, a single main road and a wide, south-facing beach of fine sand that is unusually broad at low tide. The wooden fishing pier at the end of Main Street is the centre of the beach, and the live cam on this page is the Sunset Beach Pier Cam streamed for a local real-estate company, looking along the pier and the surf. At the western end of the island, a long walk down the sand, lies Bird Island, a protected nature reserve and home of the Kindred Spirit mailbox, where visitors have left notes and letters in a small mailbox among the dunes since the early 1980s. Ocean Isle Beach is the next island to the east. The sea here is generally gentle, and the swimming is good on calm summer days, while hurricanes passing offshore in late summer and autumn bring surf and strong currents, and the inlets at either end run hard on the tide. Northerly winds blow offshore. Loggerhead turtles nest on the beach in summer. Sea temperatures here range from roughly 11 °C in late winter to 28 °C in high summer.
