Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is a small town squeezed between Fort Lauderdale and Pompano Beach that has kept its low-rise, village character; strict height limits mean the beach is lined with small hotels and shops rather than towers. The town calls itself the shore diving capital of Florida, and with reason: a line of coral reef runs only about a hundred metres off the beach, close enough to snorkel from the sand on calm days, with soft corals, tropical fish and turtles. The landmark is Anglins Fishing Pier at the end of Commercial Boulevard, with a plaza of restaurants and cafés at its foot, and the live cam on this page is the EarthCam stream from the pier. The water is usually clear and gentle enough for swimming and stand-up paddling, but stay well clear of the pier's fishing lines, and on windy east-wind days or after winter cold fronts the sea turns choppy and murky. Lifeguards watch the main stretch around the pier. This is a beach for swimming, snorkelling and watching the sea rather than surfing. Water is about 23 °C in winter and 30 °C in late summer.
