Sombrero Beach is the city beach of Marathon, in the Middle Keys, at the end of Sombrero Beach Road on the Atlantic side of Vaca Key. It is one of the few real sand beaches in the Florida Keys, a strip of imported and natural sand backed by palms, lawns, picnic shelters and a playground, and the city runs it as a free public park. This live beach cam from FloridaKeysTV looks across the beach and the shallow, turquoise water toward the reef. The Florida Reef lies several miles offshore and breaks almost all ocean swell before it reaches the beach, so the water here is usually calm and shallow, good for families, snorkeling near the rocks and stand-up paddling. Wind is the main thing that changes conditions: the trade winds from the east and southeast can make the water choppy, and kiteboarders ride in other parts of Marathon on those days. Sea turtles nest on the beach in summer, and sections are roped off while the nests incubate. The water is warm all year, from about 22 °C in January to over 30 °C in August. Hurricane season, June through November, is the time to watch the forecast closely.
