Tobay Beach is a municipal beach of the Town of Oyster Bay on Jones Beach Island, the long barrier island on the south shore of Long Island, a few miles east of Jones Beach State Park along Ocean Parkway. On the ocean side it offers a broad, clean Atlantic beach with lifeguards, a boardwalk area, a pavilion with food and parking; on the bay side the town runs a marina and the Tobay Beach Bird and Wildlife Sanctuary, a stretch of marsh and ponds known to birdwatchers. Access in the summer season is controlled by the town, with parking passes for residents and fees for others, and the beach hosts a large Fourth of July fireworks show. The live cam on this page is the Town of Oyster Bay's own TOBAY Beach stream. The ocean here faces due south and catches the same swells as the rest of the Long Island south shore: east and south-east swells from hurricanes in late summer and autumn and from winter nor'easters, best with a north wind, while summer days are often small and choppy from the south-west sea breeze. Rip currents are a common hazard on this coast. The water runs from about 4 °C in winter to 22 °C in August.
