Kalajoki Hiekkasärkät, the "sand banks", has been one of Finland's nationally known holiday areas since the 1970s. It lies on the Bothnian Bay beside Highway 8, about ten kilometres south of Kalajoki town, with around 600 hectares of sand dunes along the coast; the Tuomipakat dunes rise to almost 20 metres. Land uplift keeps reshaping the shoreline here, so this is a landscape still on the move. This camera, from the Starlapland channel, stands at the Pakka adventure park and looks west across low pines and open sand to the sea on the horizon, so it shows the dune country and the sky rather than the waterline. It is run mainly for its sky views, including night timelapses. Facilities have grown fast, with a spa hotel, a marine nature centre opened in 2007 and some 12,500 holiday beds by 2017. Local lore even claims Nordic walking began on these dunes. Sea temperature and wind figures for planning are underneath.
