Alassio, on the Riviera di Ponente west of Savona, has one of the longest and finest sandy beaches in Liguria, a curve of several kilometres along the Baia del Sole that most of the region, with its pebble coves, cannot match. The town behind it is known for the Budello, its narrow shopping street running parallel to the shore, and for the Muretto, a wall covered with ceramic tiles signed by singers, actors and sportspeople. Offshore lies the Isola Gallinara, a small protected island. The bay faces south-east and the hills behind cut off the cold northerly winds, so winters are mild and the sea is usually calm, shallow near the shore and well suited to children and paddleboards. South-westerly libeccio storms are the ones that bring big waves onto the beach in autumn and winter. Much of the sand is taken by bathing establishments with sunbeds in summer, with free public stretches in between. Sea temperature goes from about 13 °C in February to around 25 °C in August.
