Les Sablettes is the beach right under the old town of Menton, the last French town before the Italian border, between the old harbour and the Garavan district. Above it rise the tall, ochre and pastel houses of the old town and the bell tower of the Basilica of Saint-Michel, which make it one of the most photographed corners of the Riviera. The beach is mostly fine gravel with some sand, and it faces south-east into the Bay of Garavan, sheltered by breakwaters and by the mountains that close Menton off from the north, which give the town its famously mild winters and its lemon groves, celebrated each February at the Fête du Citron. The water is usually calm and good for swimming, though easterly and south-easterly winds can bring a short swell. The harbour next door holds yachts and fishing boats rather than surf, and this is a beach for swimming and lazy days. Sea temperature is about 13 °C in late winter and about 24 °C in August.
