Capo Testa is a granite headland just west of Santa Teresa Gallura, at the northern tip of Sardinia, joined to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus with a beach on each side: Rena di Ponente facing west and Rena di Levante facing east. Rena di Levante is the more sheltered of the two, a small beach of pale sand and clear, turquoise water backed by Mediterranean scrub, with the lighthouse road behind it and the wind-sculpted boulders of the Valle della Luna a walk away. On a clear day Corsica is in view across the Strait of Bonifacio, only about twelve kilometres wide here. The strait funnels the winds, and the usual choice locally is to come to the east beach when the mistral or westerly winds make the west side rough, and to the west beach when easterlies blow; an easterly or south-easterly wind is the one that brings chop to Rena di Levante. It is a beach for swimming and snorkelling around the rocks. Sea temperature is about 14 °C in late winter and roughly 24 to 25 °C in August.
