Hiratsuka Beach is the city shore of Hiratsuka, in the middle of Kanagawa's Shonan coast on the west bank of the Sagami River, facing Sagami Bay to the south. The beaches here are wide, dark-sanded and open, and that width is why American planners chose the area as one of the landing sites for the planned invasion of Japan at the end of the Second World War. Today a beach park with a boardwalk sits behind the sand, and the Shonan coastal cycle path runs from the Sagami River here towards Enoshima. This beach webcam is operated by the Kanagawa prefectural coast and harbour camera service and looks straight out over the sand to the bay; at night only the surf line and the lights on the beach are visible. Because it is exposed to the south, Hiratsuka picks up swell from typhoons and southerly winds and is a regular surf beach on the Shonan coast, while calm summer days suit swimming. The city has a humid subtropical climate with its wettest month in September. Use the live picture with our surf forecast, tide and sea temperature to judge the conditions.
