Hojo Beach is the main town beach of Tateyama, near the southern tip of the Boso Peninsula in Chiba, and it faces Tateyama Bay, which is also called Kagami-ga-ura, the mirror bay. It has been known as a good place for sea bathing for more than a century. When the railway reached Awa-Hojo Station, today's Tateyama Station, in 1919, the station was built on the second sandbar back from the shore, boats still came in from Tokyo, and guesthouses and company and school dormitories went up along the coast until Hojo became the leading bathing beach of southern Boso. In summer beach houses still fill the sand, and hotels line the shore road. Every year on the third Saturday of January the Tateyama Bay mid-winter swim takes place here, a tradition of the local Awa school that became an annual event after the then Crown Prince Akihito visited in 1948. This beach webcam, run by e-CAM, looks along the beach to the bay. Because the bay opens to the west and is sheltered from Pacific swell, the water is usually calm, making it a family beach and a good place for paddleboarding.
