Bacalar Lagoon, the Laguna de Bacalar, is a long, narrow body of fresh water in the far south of Quintana Roo, around 40 km north of Chetumal and the border with Belize. It is known as the lagoon of seven colours, because its white limestone bottom and changing depth turn the water from pale aquamarine to deep blue within a few metres. Springs and cenotes feed it from below; the Cenote Azul, a deep sinkhole, lies just south of the town. Along the shore grow stromatolites, layered rock-like structures built by microbes, which are fragile and easily broken: do not stand on them. The town of Bacalar, a Pueblo Mágico, keeps the Fort of San Felipe, built by the Spanish in the 18th century against pirates who came up from the bay through the channel still called the Canal de los Piratas. With no swell and little current, the lagoon suits kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and small sailing boats; the easterly breeze usually picks up in the afternoon.
