Zihuatanejo is a fishing town on Guerrero's Costa Grande that grew into a resort without losing its working waterfront, wrapped around a deep, nearly round bay. The bay's main beaches are Playa Principal in the town, where the fishing boats are pulled up; Playa La Madera just east of it, a short walk along the shore; the long sweep of Playa La Ropa further round; and Las Gatas near the mouth, protected by an old stone reef that local legend says was built for a Purépecha ruler. Because the mouth of the bay is narrow, Pacific swell barely reaches the inner beaches, and the water is usually calm enough for swimming, paddle boards and snorkelling. Ixtapa y Zihuatanejo, a local channel, streams the live cam here; it points at Playa La Madera and across the bay to the town and the hills behind. The planned resort of Ixtapa lies a few kilometres up the coast. The water temperature stays between about 27 °C and 30 °C year round, the dry season lasts from November to May, and the ending of the film The Shawshank Redemption made the town's name known worldwide.
