Saltburn-by-the-Sea is a Victorian resort on the North Yorkshire coast, south-east of Redcar, where the cliffs of the Cleveland coast begin. Its long sandy beach runs north towards Marske and is split by Saltburn Pier, built in 1869 and the last surviving pleasure pier on the north-east coast of England; the town above is reached by a water-balanced cliff lift that has been running since the 1880s. Saltburn is one of the busiest surf spots in the north-east, with surf schools and a surf shop on the seafront. The north-facing beach takes swell from the north and north-east, and the peaks on either side of the pier are the most popular, especially at lower tides; a southerly or south-westerly wind is offshore. Under the high red cliffs of Huntcliff at the eastern end, rocks, scars and the rising tide need care. Swimmers should stick to the lifeguarded area in summer. The North Sea is cold here, peaking at only about 14–15 °C in late summer and dropping to around 6–7 °C by February, so most people surf in thick wetsuits for much of the year.
