Longsands is the main beach of Tynemouth, on the North Sea coast just north of the mouth of the Tyne, stretching for the best part of a mile from the headland of the priory and castle north to Cullercoats. It is the heart of the surf scene in the north-east of England: the east-facing beach picks up swell generated by low-pressure systems out in the North Sea, mostly from the north-east to south-east, and the sandbanks along its length give peaks for everyone from surf-school beginners to experienced locals. The best waves come in autumn and winter with a westerly, offshore wind; in summer there are long flat spells. Southerly and northerly winds blow cross-shore and easterlies blow straight in. The water is cold – it rarely gets above 14–15 °C even in August and drops to around 7 °C in late winter – so a good wetsuit is needed all year. The beach is lifeguarded in summer, has a promenade with cafés, surf shops and parking, and both Tynemouth and Cullercoats Metro stations are a short walk away, which makes it one of the easiest surf beaches in Britain to reach by public transport.
