North Cronulla is the most popular of the string of beaches on the Kurnell Peninsula side of Cronulla, in Sydney's south, and the closest of them to the town's train station and shops. It faces east-south-east and sits at the southern end of the long sweep that runs up to Wanda and Greenhills, so it picks up east and south-east swell well, while the headland at the south end gives some shelter when the wind swings southerly. The beach breaks over sandbanks, with peaks that change after big seas, and it suits learners and intermediate surfers on small days. Cronulla's better-known reef and point waves, such as the Point and Shark Island, lie just to the south and are for experienced surfers only. Westerly and north-westerly winds are offshore, which makes winter mornings the most reliable time for a clean surf report. North Cronulla has a surf life saving club and a patrolled swimming area in season; swim between the flags, because rips run along the beach.
