Ponta Negra is Natal's best-known beach, a curve of pale sand a few kilometres south of downtown, where the Via Costeira ends, the coast road lined with hotels. Its landmark is the Morro do Careca, a bare dune more than a hundred metres high that closes the southern end of the bay; climbing it has been forbidden for years to stop erosion, so people photograph it from the sand instead. The northern part of the beach is backed by a promenade, kiosks and restaurants, and the sea there is usually gentle enough for swimming, with a short, soft beach break that beginners and bodyboarders use when a south-easterly swell arrives. Rock and reef patches appear at low tide, so check the tide table on this page before planning a swim or a walk around the point. The live webcam, run by Live Cam Natal, looks across the bay towards the dune and shows how crowded the sand is and how the water looks right now. Sea temperature stays around 26 to 28 °C all year; the wettest months on this coast are roughly March to July, and the south-east trade wind blows most afternoons.
