Villefranche-sur-Mer sits on one of the deepest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, a roadstead between Nice and Cap Ferrat where cruise ships anchor offshore. The Plage des Marinières runs along the inner shore of the bay below the old town, a long beach of fine gravel and sand with the coastal railway passing just behind it, and Villefranche station a few steps away. The bay is enclosed on three sides by Mont Boron and the Cap Ferrat peninsula, so the water is usually flat and very clear, and the beach is good for swimming, snorkelling and paddleboarding. It opens only to the south, and southerly winds are the ones that bring waves in; the Mistral rarely reaches this far east with any strength. Shade is limited, and the beach fills up on summer weekends when the trains bring people from Nice. Sea temperature goes from about 13 °C in late winter to roughly 24 °C in August.
