Playa Linda is the long beach at the northern end of Ixtapa, the resort that the Mexican government planned in the 1970s next to the old town of Zihuatanejo. Where Ixtapa's main beach, El Palmar, is lined with hotels, Playa Linda is wilder: a broad sweep of sand backed by palms, open to the Pacific and running on north for several kilometres. Its pier is where the small boats leave for Isla Ixtapa, a few minutes offshore, whose sheltered coves are the usual place for snorkelling around here. Behind the beach an estuary and mangroves hold crocodiles, which can be seen from a fenced area near the pier, and a cycle path links Playa Linda with the hotel zone. Because the beach faces the open ocean, it takes the full swell, with waves breaking on the sand and currents along the shore; swim only on calm days and near the pier area. The live cam on this page, from the local channel Ixtapa y Zihuatanejo, looks down over the hotels and the beach. Sea temperature stays around 27 °C to 30 °C, and the rains come between June and October.
