Piha is a black-sand beach on Auckland's wild west coast, about 40 kilometres from the city across the Waitākere Ranges, and the best-known surf beach in the Auckland region. Lion Rock, a large volcanic outcrop, divides the beach into North Piha and South Piha, and the iron-rich sand gets very hot underfoot in summer. Facing west into the Tasman Sea, Piha receives consistent swell from the south-west and west, and has beach-break peaks along both halves, with the south end around Lion Rock and the Camel usually the busiest; the bar and channels change constantly. It is a powerful beach and among the most dangerous in New Zealand for swimmers: strong rips form along its length, especially near the rocks, and the volunteer lifeguards of the Piha and United North Piha surf life saving clubs perform many rescues each summer. Swim only between the flags, and never near the Gap or the rocks. Easterly winds blow offshore, usually in the early mornings and most often in summer and autumn. The water ranges from about 15 °C in winter to 21 °C in summer. The Piha surf report below shows today's swell, wind and water temperature.
