Tāhunanui Beach is Nelson's main beach, a wide expanse of golden sand on Tasman Bay at the top of New Zealand's South Island, about 4 kilometres south-west of the city centre. Sheltered inside the bay, it gets very little ocean swell, and at low tide the sea retreats a long way across the shallow sand flats, leaving warm, knee-deep pools that make it popular with families. Nelson is one of the sunniest places in New Zealand, and on summer afternoons a north-easterly sea breeze fills in across Tasman Bay; with the shallow water and open beach, that makes Tāhunanui a well-known spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing, particularly the stretch at the back beach towards the airport and the Waimea Inlet. Shallow flat water at mid to high tide suits beginners and freestyle, and kite schools operate in the area in summer; at low tide the sand flats leave little depth to ride. At Tāhunanui, southerly winds blow offshore. Behind the beach, a reserve has playgrounds, a holiday park and cafés. Water temperatures range from about 11 °C in winter to 20 °C in summer.
