Katwijk aan Zee is a seaside town in South Holland, between Noordwijk to the north and Wassenaar to the south, where the Old Rhine reaches the North Sea through a set of sluices built in the early nineteenth century. Its boulevard is dominated by the White Church, a whitewashed church that has served as a landmark for fishermen for centuries, and a recent coastal defence project hid a large car park inside the dunes behind the boulevard. The live webcam, a pan-tilt-zoom camera run by a local enthusiast, looks out from the boulevard over the beach and the sea. The beach faces west-north-west into the North Sea, so westerly and north-westerly winds blow onshore and bring the waves, south-westerly winds run along the coast, and easterly winds are offshore. On onshore days surfers ride the sandbanks around the beach entrances, and kitesurfers use the zones marked away from the busy central beach. The outflow of the Old Rhine sluices and the rip currents between the sandbanks make swimming risky away from the lifeguard posts, which are staffed in the summer season.
